Royals #TBT: See the Royal Family (and the Royal Red Shorts!) 50 Years Ago
Little Prince Andrew steals the show in an adorable 1965 shot
Here, on Queen Elizabeth’s 39th birthday a little more than 50 years ago, a 5-year-old Prince Andrew is seen rocking a crimson pair as the family gathers at Frogmore House, Windsor, in April 1965.
In the Queen’s arms is her youngest child, Prince Edward, who had turned one a month earlier, while Andrew’s older brother, and heir to throne, Prince Charles was 16. Princess Anne was 14. Also pictured is family patriarch Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who was 43.
Princess Kate recently dressed her son in shorts that echoed those of dad William at the same age. Some observers believe she keenly looks at former royal portraits and fashions and has been quietly "choreographing" key moments.
The 1965 portrait was taken on the steps of Frogmore House, which is situated in Windsor Great Park about a mile from the Queen’s favorite residence, the castle. The royals don t live there anymore but do use it for receptions. It hosted its last prominent bash when the Queen’s eldest grandson, Peter Phillips, and his bride Autumn had their wedding party there in May 2008.
The late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, is said to have loved the house and spent part of her honeymoon there.
