With her parents away in Bhutan on a state visit to the remote Himalayan realm of King Jigme and Queen Jetsun (the latter turned 26 on June 4), Princess Madeleine was expected to spend her birthday quietly in Stockholm.
Her husband Chris O’Neill will also be there to lighten the load – much as Prince Philip does for his wife.
Because of O’Neill’s career obligations as a banker, the young family has been living in London.
But they are spending a short period in Stockholm following the May 27 christening of their nephew Prince Oscar, who is third in line to the throne.
This is to not just to familiarize the young children with their homeland and its people, but also give the English-speaking O’Neill an opportunity for deep immersion in the Swedish language, according to the Swedish journal Svenskdam.
In accordance with Swedish Royal Family tradition, Princess Madeleine is expected to move back to Sweden in due course so her children can be educated there.
