Prince William will be hoping for an early birthday present when he goes to see England play football in France on June 20.
That’s on the eve of his 34th birthday – and marks the third game of the team’s league matches at the European Championships. If they are successful in that game, against Slovakia, and the other two, then they will be through the next round and soccer-mad William will have much to celebrate.
The news of his upcoming visit in his role as President of the Football Association came as he sent the team a good luck video message, saying “remember, the nation is behind you.” The tournament kicks off in Paris on Friday evening.
For someone who is vice-royal patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, and lived in Wales when he was first married to Princess Kate, he is perhaps being diplomatic by missing the game England plays against Wales on June 16.
In the new video, William addresses team coach Roy Hodgson, his staff and players and adds, “I know you have done everything possible to prepare in the right way, building on the hard work that has been done at Wembley, St. George’s Park and on the road.”
He adds, “Like millions of fans across the country, I will be tuning into the opening game against Russia on Saturday night. I am definitely going to make it out there myself during the tournament. And rest assured that everyone back home will be cheering England on whenever you play.
We are all looking forward to watching some great football over the coming weeks. An exciting performance from this team will inspire the next generation of England players and staff to go out and get involved in the game at the grassroots.
I know the FA is sending the message to supporters everywhere that we are together for England. Remember, the nation is behind you. Good luck to you all.
