He couldn't hide his excitement (or his love of math!)

Remember how excited you were for the first day of school (because your friends were just going to love your new backpack)? Yup, royals are no different (and just look at that red backpack!).

Prince Henrik, the adorable 6-year-old son of Prince Joachim – the younger brother to Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and sixth in line to the throne – has traded kindergarten for the exciting, expansive world of academia. You know, the first grade.

In honor of the special occasion, the freshly minted student spoke to the press and posed for photographs with his family outside their Copenhagen home.

His little sister, Princess Athena, joined the family for their photo op, although the 3-year-old still has a few years to go before she has a first-day-of-school shoot of her own. The family dog, Apple, a Bichon Frise, also joined in for the fun, poking his head into the shots from behind the family.

Henrik will be attending a private Catholic school, Sisters of St. Joseph, near his family’s home. He may just be in the midst of conquering his first day, but Henrik already has a favorite subject. He told Danish newspaper BT that he enjoyed adding – a future mathematician, perhaps?

Despite the brevity of the day (the first day lasted for only two hours, and Henrik was accompanied by his parents and his little sister), the young prince came prepared: He wore a large backpack with a Ferrari logo (although without any schoolbooks, he didn’t have much to fill it with, according to Royalista).

Henrik and Athena are the couple’s only children. Joachim has two children from his first marriage, Prince Nikolai and Prince Felix, who live nearby in Copenhagen.
