Prince Harry is a traditionalist at heart.
The royal, who announced his engagement to Meghan Markle on Monday, asked for her mother, Doria Ragland’s permission before popping the question, a source tells PEOPLE.
Markle has been outspoken about her love and admiration for her mother in the past, so it’s no surprise that Harry would seek out Ragland’s blessing before asking Markle to marry him. In an August 2017 article for Glamour, Markle talked about the impact her mother had on her, calling Ragland her “best friend.”
“My mom’s a yoga instructor, but she does social work, as well, and she works specifically with the geriatric community. For me to watch this level of lifelong sensitivity to nurturing and caregiving, but at the same time my mom has always been a free spirit,” she told Glamour. “She’s got dread locks and a nose ring. She just ran the L.A. Marathon. We can just have so much fun together, and yet, I’ll still find so much solace in her support. That duality coexists the same way it would in a best friend.”
Harry got to know Markle’s mother throughout their relationship. Ragland even attended the closing ceremonies of the 2017 Invictus Games with Markle and Harry in September 2017. The trio watched the ceremony along with the couple’s friends Jessica Mulroney and Markus Anderson (who introduced Markle and Harry in July 2016) in a private box.
