As the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge vacation at a super-luxurious Indian Ocean resort, 7½-month-old Prince George is being cared for by his maternal grandparents, Carole and Michael Middleton.

As always, he’ll be the center of attention – the Middleton home was his first destination upon leaving the hospital after his birth last July. It’s not known if George’s new nanny is also with him this week.

Kate’s parents have been “spoiling him rotten, just like any other grandparents,” a family friend tells PEOPLE. “They are just overwhelmed to be grandparents. They are helping out in whatever way they can and wherever they are able to – you always do with your own family, don’t you?”

William and Kate are 5,500 miles away, near the equator in the Maldives, at the brand-new Cheval Blanc Randheli. They arrived early Thursday and are thought to be staying a week.

Upon their return, they have an engagement together at the Irish Guards barracks to mark St. Patrick’s Day March 17.

After that, they will prepare for their three-week official tour of New Zealand and Australia in April.
