Does that determined glint in Prince George‘s eye look familiar, royal watchers?

In a new set of photos of the 16-month-old royal, George has the motivated and inquisitive expression of a boy en route to his next adventure – much like that of his father, Prince William, in a photo taken of him around the same age.

Toddling in a blue jumpsuit, a roughly 18-month-old William (above, left) is off on a mission as well. When William was George’s age, he too was heading into the Christmas season with his parents. The following September his mum Princess Diana would give birth to his brother, Prince Harry. George’s mother, Princess Kate, is preparing for baby number two, who is due in April.

The new trio of George pictures (taken in late November) were shot by Harry’s private secretary Ed Lane Fox, who used to be a professional photographer, in a courtyard at the family’s London home Kensington Palace. In the shots, George wears a blue wooly vest by Cath Kidston, decorated with soliders just like those who guard his great granny at Buckingham Palace.

The pictures were released late Saturday to update royal fans on George’s progress in the run-up to Christmas. William and Kate “are well aware of the interest” in George, “and are keen to share some special moments in his life,” a palace source told PEOPLE.

And those close to the couple say there is a “grateful acknowledgment” from the royals of the fact that “their request for Prince George to grow up without intrusion from photography has been, and continues to be, honored.”
