"She was lovely, and she remembered me," the American Idol alum said of Meghan
Katharine McPhee recently caught up with her old musical theater buddy – and invited the royal mom-to-be to come see her on West End!
The American Idol alum reunited with Meghan Markle – with whom she performed in musicals when they were both teens growing up in Los Angeles – last week backstage at WE Day, where Prince Harry surprised the crowd by “dragging” his wife onstage with him for an unexpected appearance.
McPhee told the Evening Standard, “She was lovely, and she remembered me – she remembered my sister more specifically because they were in the same class – and she said, ‘I’m just sitting around waiting for the baby to come.’ “
During an appearance on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, the Smash star added that although they posed for a photo together at the event, she hadn’t been able to get it. “You know, the royals have to approve everything,” she shared.
McPhee recently revealed her royal connection to celebrate her starring role in London’s production of Waitress, a role she previously played on Broadway. She shared a throwback photo with Meghan as they both smile in stage makeup – including bright red lipstick!
“Both did musicals together as a kid. one is now the duchess and the other is starring on the west end. basically the same life if you ask me,” the singer and actress captioned the post, adding the hashtag #tbt.
McPhee shared on Good Morning Britain that she contemplated sharing the photo around the time of Meghan and Harry’s royal wedding but thought to herself, “That’s stupid. That’s opportunistic.”
She added with a laugh, “But then when I had something to promote, I’m here in London, living in her country now doing a musical, I thought, ‘I’ll post it!’ And it became a much bigger thing.’ “
McPhee – who recalled Meghan as being “always lovely and always talented and always put together” – also wants the Duchess of Sussex to come see her perform in Waitress.
“I’d like her to come to the show – but no pressure on her,” she told the Evening Standard. “I’m hoping she will, and I’m going to invite her through some mutual friends.”
Aside from naming the National Theatre in London as one of her four initial patronages, Meghan has been known to catch a show for a private date night with Harry every now and again. Before seeing a gala performance of Hamilton, the couple saw the hit musical on West End around Valentine’s Day last year.
The royal parents-to-be, who are expecting their first child in April, headed across town earlier this month to see Tina — The Tina Turner Musical.
They were fulfilling a promise they made in November when they attended the Royal Variety Performance at The London Palladium, where they met some of the show’s performers and said they would like to come see the musical.
Meghan and Harry’s evening outing was revealed by the show’s social media.
“We were thrilled and honoured to welcome The Duke and Duchess of Sussex to the show last night,” the musical’s official Twitter accounted tweeted.
