After the majestic night out (think jewels) and the workaday (think children and art therapy), Princess Kate shifted gears Sunday and took on a surprise turn – as one of four godparents chosen for the son of a university friend in Maldon, Essex, east of London.

Kate, Prince William and 6-month-old Prince George were at the special ceremony for their friends, and the littlest royal was on his best behavior.

“She was here as a godmother, not as a princess,” local clergyman Rev. Ken Dunstan, of St. Barnabas Church in Mayland, tells PEOPLE.

“She did what I asked her to do, which was to make the promises that all godparents make.”

George was one of a few babies in the 50-strong congregation. There were nine children under 16 including three babies, Dunstan reveals.

“There was a little squeak early on from one of them but after that it was all fine. He behaved himself.”

The reverend also adds that Kate was looking “smart.”
