Oops! Joanne Froggatt Reveals the Embarrassing Thing She Said to Princess Kate on the Set of Downton Abbey
Mrs. Bates, you’re making us blush!
Joanne Froggatt, who plays the eternally unlucky lady’s maid Anna Bates on Downton Abbey, stopped by Conan this week, and like the rest of her fellow castmates, she couldn’t resist dishing on Princess Kate‘s visit to the Downton set last year – and the raunchy comment she made that had her cringing!
Froggatt and co-star Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary Crawley, were the only two people actually shooting on the day of Princess Kate’s visit, she revealed (though the rest of the cast popped by for the occasion!) and before they were able to say hello to their VIP guest, they had to finish up some work – meaning acting out a scene in front of Kate!
Afterward they wrapped up their scene, they chatted with the royal, who mentioned how weird it felt to be in Lady Mary’s bedroom.
“I said, Yeah, not many people get to come in Lady Mary’s bedroom,’ ” she said. “And then I was like, Oh my God. What have I just said?’ I’ve just said something that could be taken really the wrong way and I thought, Do I say? Do I draw attention to it?’ ”
Princess Kate, of course – the class act that she is – didn’t draw any attention to it.

That wasn’t the only stress-inducing moment during Kate’s visit. In the days leading up to her arrival, security came around with dogs to scope out the set. And the anticipation just got more intense as Kate’s arrival drew closer, especially because there was someone telling them every minute how much time they had until Kate’s arrival.
“You’re just getting more and more nervous every time they come in,” she said.
The wait (and the nerves!), however, were well worth it.
“She’s just beautiful and amazing,” Froggatt said. “She has this aura when she walks in a room.”
