Barack Obama, Priyanka Chopra and More Stars React to Prince Harry & Meghan Markle's Engagement

Lin-Manuel Miranda, Khloé Kardashian and more celebrities celebrated the royal engagement on social media Monday

Fans all around the world were elated about the royal engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle — including those in Hollywood!

Celebrities, from politicians to reality stars and actors, rejoiced over the couple’s big news on social media Monday.

Former President Barack Obama tweeted his well wishes to the newly engaged couple, writing: “Michelle and I are delighted to congratulate Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on their engagement. We wish you a lifetime of joy and happiness together.” (The Obamas became friends with Harry as well as Prince William and Kate Middleton throughout their time in office.)

Markle‘s close friend and actress Priyanka Chopra shared the couple’s official engagement photo on Instagram along with a sweet message. “Congratulations to my girl @meghanmarkle and Prince Harry!! I’m so happy for you Meg! You deserve the best always..keep smiling that infectious smile. Xoxo,” said Chopra, who’s been featured often on Markle’s own social media.

Markle’s Suits costars also shared their congratulations to the 36-year-old actress, who revealed she is retiring from acting to focus on her royal duties.

Along with Patrick J. Adams and Wendell Pierce, Suits actor Gabriel Macht – who plays top attorney Harvey Specter – also tweeted this message: “Congrats to @meghanmarkle and Prince Harry. Sending all my best for your upcoming nuptials and a long happy life together.”

On Monday, Prince Harry and his bride-to-be announced their engagement with an official statement from the Clarence House saying that “the wedding will take place in Spring 2018.”

In addition to those in Hollywood who know the betrothed, other celebrities took to social media to express their excitement, including Lin-Manuel Miranda and Khloé Kardashian.

“It’s crazy, everyone is dancing in the streets here! (Everyone is politely keeping to themselves but you can tell they wanna dance),” the creator of Hamilton joked about the well-mannered Brits.

“Congratulations Prince Harry and Meghan Markle!” said Kardashian, who is expecting her first child with NBA boyfriend Tristan Thompson.

“I would like to offer my very warmest congratulations to HRH Prince Harry and Meghan Markle upon their engagement. This is a time of huge celebration for two people in love and, on behalf of myself, the Government and the country, I wish them great happiness for the future,” tweeted Prime Minister Theresa May.

In their first interview since announcing the engagement, Harry and Meghan shared the sweet details of the royal’s proposal.

According to the couple, the proposal happened a few weeks ago at their cottage in Kensington Palace. “It was a cozy night,” Meghan told the BBC. “We were roasting chicken. It was just an amazing surprise. It was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got down on one knee.”

Harry added: “It was a really nice moment — it was just the two of us. I think I managed to catch her by surprise.”
