It could’ve been a scene out of Wedding Crashers.

When American Idol host Ryan Seacrest and Grammy-winning singer John Mayer were hanging out with friends recently at the bar in L.A.’s Four Seasons Hotel, a bridesmaid spotted the celebs and invited them to her pal’s reception next door. So at around 1 a.m., Seacrest and Mayer hit the dance floor to congratulate the ecstatic bride, Lori Wolfson, and her groom, Lee Johnson.

“They came in as the wonderful night was ending and it was a great nightcap,” guest Lauren Guttman tells us. Seacrest and Mayer chatted with the beaming bride and her ‘maids, posed for pictures and even offered a tribute to the newlyweds – who are now honeymooning on a South African safari – on their wedding video. “It really topped the wedding,” says Jeanne Wolfson, the bride’s mother. Talk about making a special appearance.

Pieces of Her
Ashlee Simpson is hard at work on her sophomore album, the follow-up to 2004’s multiplatinum-selling Autobiography. And she’s baring her soul on it – even writing about her disastrous lip-synching appearance on Saturday Night Live on the song “Beautifully Broken.”

“Everything connects to what I’ve been through in the past year,” Simpson told us at a party at Amanda Scheer Demme’s Tropicana Bar at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. “The song is about it’s okay to mess up, that it’s okay to do bad. It’s very normal, actually.”

Simpson – who’s hitting the big screen in the romantic comedy Undiscovered on Aug. 26 – says to expect a more grown-up Ashlee since her last go-round. “I’ve been through a lot since I put my first album out,” she says. “It’s where I’m at in my life.”

Caught in the Act
• A very pregnant Heidi Klum and husband Seal, enjoying a quiet lunch together at Mr. Cecil’s California Ribs in Sherman Oaks, Calif. They ordered two full racks of baby-back ribs with sides of coleslaw, barbecued beans and french fries. At the end of the meal, Seal told the server, “We just love this place so much. We want three more full racks of baby-back ribs to take home with us!”

Debra Messing, shopping with husband Daniel Zelman and son Roman at Whole Foods in Westwood, Calif. The Will & Grace star wore a white tank top and light-blue flowing skirt and stocked up on summer fruits and vegetables.
