Gotta hand it to ’em: The Dresden Dolls do a pretty credible job of blurring the ideological and stylistic lines between rock and cabaret. Abetted by drummer Brian Viglione, keyboardist, singer, and principal songwriter Amanda Palmer bangs out witty, thoughtful songs on addiction (”My Alcoholic Friends”), sexual identity (”Sex Changes”), and plain old sex (”First Orgasm”). At its best, Yes, Virginia… recalls David Bowie’s forays into similar territory (see Hunky Dory). Warning: Consume this in small doses; the Tinkertoy classicism and Palmer’s aren’t-I-clever? archness grow a tad grating.
