Having already hit the holy trinity of indie yuppiedom — a spot on the Garden State soundtrack, a benediction from KCRW’s influential host Nic Harcourt, and a record held for best-seller on independent online retailer — Alexi Murdoch’s self-released debut will surely waft from many a Toyota Prius stereo this summer. It’s easy to parse his popularity; the singer’s vocal affect and gentle melodies are startlingly similar to Nick Drake’s. At times, in fact, Time Without Consequences feels more like séance than simple recording; still, he’s an impressive medium.
