The Other Side of The Bridge

Stark northern Canadian winters and lush, flower-filled summers mark the lives of The Other Side of the Bridge‘s characters: Ian, son of the town’s only doctor, who flails against his father’s expectations; Arthur, a hardworking local farmer; Jake, Arthur’s no-good big-city brother; and Laura, the beautiful woman who long ago fell hard for Jake but married Arthur instead. Their stories overlap in predictable but nonetheless moving ways against a WWII backdrop. Mary Lawson is a sure and capable writer; if her saga holds no surprises, it yields no disappointments either, just the pleasure of an engrossing yarn well told.
