Too often, the sound on indie-covers collections is a little muffled — you know, by all those tongues lodged so firmly in cheeks. On the surface, Guilt By Association — comp of ”guilty favorites” — seems suspect: witty, urbane Luna crooning Paula Abdul’s ”Straight Up”? Music-blogger Swede-hearts the Concretes turning Take That’s ”Back for Good” into a smoky elegy? And yet it works. Will Oldham does Mariah! Devendra Banhart channels Oasis! Good times. Except when it’s not: Mike Watt, please step far, far away from Blue ?ster Cult. B
