Glitter in the Gutter

Jesse Malin’s got religion — he’s a fervent believer in love, the soul-rending power of the E minor chord, and Bruce Springsteen. All three turn up on his third album, Glitter in the Gutter. (The Boss guests on the weepy ballad ”Broken Radio.”) This is an old-fashioned roots-rock CD, with big choruses, blasts of heavy guitar, and lyrics about beautiful girls and beautiful losers. Malin isn’t a poet like his heroes Springsteen and Paul Westerberg, and his nasally voice can grate. But it’s hard to be a cynic about a record this untrendy, with this many catchy tunes. B+
