After breaking out in Brokeback Mountain, Heath Ledger is in love again, only this time, his paramour is heroin. Based on a 1997 novel by Australian poet Luke Davies, Candy charts a love triangle between a free-spirited poet (Ledger), an art student (Abbie Cornish), and smack. ”We propel each other into addiction,” explains Ledger, whose research included clinic visits and channeling memories of ”drinking to the point of feeling sedated.” Given cowriter-director Neil Armfield’s background directing operas and Chekhov, Ledger says, don’t expect something tidy. ”It’s not an educational flick that should be shown in schools.”
