President Trump would “welcome” a meeting with singer Jackie Evancho and her sister, who is transgender, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said at the daily press briefing on Thursday.
The former America’s Got Talent star, 16, who sang at the presidential inauguration last month, requested that the president meet with her and her older sister, Juliet, 18, after he revoked guidelines that said transgender students should be allowed to use bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond with their gender identity.
“@realDonaldTrump u gave me the honor 2 sing at your inauguration. Pls give me & my sis the honor 2 meet with u 2 talk #transgender rghts,” Jackie tweeted Wednesday.
Asked about the request during Thursday’s press briefing, Spicer said, “Yeah, I think the president would be welcome to meet with her.”
Before Trump’s reversal on the Obama-era directive was officially announced on Wednesday night, Jackie took to Twitter to say she was “obviously disappointed” by the president’s decision.
“I am obviously disappointed in the @POTUS decision to send the #transgender bathroom issue to the states to decide. #sisterlove,” she tweeted.
But the sisters remain hopeful that they can help bring about new protections for transgender people.
“What I want to say to Donald Trump is, can we please sit down and talk, how can we make transgenders safe?” Juliet said in a interview with CNN.
“Maybe there’s a way we can create a federal law or something, something that’s just going to help with transgender discrimination,” Jackie added.

“It’s just going to divide America more than it already is,” she added of the reversal. “We’re trying to work to piece America together again.”
Juliet came out as transgender in 2015.
Jackie told PEOPLE at the time, “She told me she was transgender, and I was actually very happy for her because she finally found herself, and she can be who she wants to be.”
