Daniel Radcliffe Knocks Tom Brady for Once Keeping Trump MAGA Hat in His Locker: 'Come On Dude'

Speaking with Variety at the Sundance Film Festival last week, Radcliffe, 29, said he’d be rooting for the Patriots’ opponents, the Los Angeles Rams, in Sunday’s Super Bowl.

“The whole world’s rooting against the Patriots,” he noted wryly.

Asked if he thought star quarterback Tom Brady should retire, Radcliffe kept it light, responding, “He should stop winning things.” Then he turned toward President Donald Trump, who has known Brady for years.

“Take that MAGA hat out of your locker,” Radcliffe continued, referring to a pro-Trump “Make America Great Again Hat” that Brady kept in his locker at one point in 2015. (“Now that he’s running for president, he sent me a hat, and he gave it to [Patriots owner Robert Kraft] a couple weeks ago,” Brady said at the time, according to Politico. “So it found its way to my locker.”)

In his Variety interview, Radcliffe said the MAGA hat moment was “when as a country we were all like, ‘Oh come on dude, we all want — you’re awesome and [we’re] behind you, don’t put that in there.’ ”

So of course he’s a Rams fan for the championship. “I don’t think they’re going to win, but I want them to,” he said.

Brady’s relationship with Trump traces back to 2002 and they met when he was a judge in a Trump beauty pageant, he has said, according to Boston.com.

Sources who know them say Brady and Trump were longtime buddies on the golf course from before Trump ever announced he would seek the presidency.

In the early days of Trump’s campaign, Brady, 41, was effusive about their friendship, but later distanced himself amid Trump’s often-controversial and divisive rhetoric. Brady’s wife, Gisele Bündchen, chafed at many of Trump’s politics, with which she disagreed.

As for the MAGA hat, a source tells PEOPLE that Brady never wore it and didn’t keep it.

“Am I going to vote for him? That’s a good question,” Brady said of Trump in September 2015, Boston.com reports. “He’s a good friend and we’ve had a lot of time on the golf course together over the years. … It’s pretty amazing what he’s been able to accomplish as an entrepreneur, and then really as a television star, and now running for political office.”

The following year, however, he said: “I don’t want to get into it, but if you know someone it doesn’t mean you agree with everything they say or they do.”

And: “I don’t believe in a lot of things. Not to denounce anything. There are different things.”

After the Patriots won the 2017 Super Bowl, Brady declined to visit the White House with his teammates because his mother was unwell, according to the Post.

Trump was distressed by this at the time, the Washington Post reported. According to the paper, he “made a number of calls and asked aides to help fix the situation, worried that Brady’s absence would reflect poorly on him.”

Just before the election, according to the New York Times, Bündchen replied to someone on Instagram to clarify — emphatically — her stance.

She was reportedly asked on a Nov. 4, 2016, post, “Gisele I heard you and tom were backing Trump! Is that true??” And she replied: “NO!”
