As the Obamas prepare to say goodbye to the White House, the bromance between President Barack Obamaand Vice President Joe Biden is entering a new chapter. But their wives are confident their special bond will endure.
“They’ll go for long walks, looking into each other’s eyes,” jokes First Lady Michelle Obama in a joint interview with PEOPLE editor in chief Jess Cagle and White House correspondent Sandra Sobieraj Westfall for this week’s cover story.
Adds the vice president’s wife, Dr. Jill Biden, with a laugh, “They’re going to be eating ice cream together somewhere, I’m sure.”

Jokes aside, Jill Biden tells PEOPLE the president and vice president “have a truly beautiful friendship.”
“And I don’t think we’ve really seen a lot of that, especially in politics,” she adds. “But I think they really love one another.”
Describing Joe Biden as “the big brother” the president never had, the first lady says her husband finds “real joy” in spending time with the vice president — be it on the White House putting green or during their regular lunches together.

The vice president is “somebody that he respects and admires,” the first lady adds of her husband. “It’s the best decision that Barack has made as president of the United States, picking Joe and Bidens as our partners in this journey.”
