Who Needs Cake? Pope Francis Celebrates His 81st Birthday with a 13-Foot Pizza

Pope Francis has had his share of pizza parties in the past, but for his 81st birthday, nothing short of a 13-foot pie would do.

The popular pontiff, who turned 81 on Sunday, blew out the single birthday candle on his extra-long pizza during a celebration at the Vatican. He had a little help from a group of children assisted by “Dispensario Santa Marta,” a Vatican pediatric clinic.

According to the Associated Press, the pope told the children to “eat all four meters (13 feet),” saying it would make them grow.

Later, during his weekly Sunday appearance to faithful, thousands of children in St. Peter’s Square shouted birthday messages to Pope Francis. “Thanks a lot, thanks a lot,” he replied from his window overlooking the square.

Francis’ love of pizza is no secret.
