Jimmy Kimmel and Roy Moore got into a war of words on Twitter Thursday afternoon, one day after the late-night host sent a comedian from his show to heckle the embattled Alabama Senate candidate at a church appearance.

Moore fired the first shot on Twitter, tweeting at Kimmel: “If you want to mock our Christian values, come down here to Alabama and do it man to man.”

Moore, who is accused of molesting teenage girls, linked to an article from the far-right news website Breitbart in which his senior adviser Drew Messer made similar comments as he accused Kimmel of “hiding behind a camera in Hollywood.” Moore has denied the allegations against him.

Kimmel fired back at Moore within a half hour, tweeting: “Sounds great Roy – let me know when you get some Christian values and I’ll be there!”

Kimmel’s tweet quickly outpaced Moore’s in likes and retweets, with many applauding the late-night host for his “mic-dropping” response.

Kimmel later tweeted:

The Twitter exchange comes after Tony Barbieri, a comedian known for interrupting news events as part of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, interrupted Moore as he spoke at a Baptist church service in southern Alabama.

Barbieri, who goes by the stage name Jake Byrd, wore a T-shirt with the words “Gimme Moore” on them as he heckled Moore by shouting: “That’s a man’s man. Does that look like the face of a molester?”

Before the disruption, Moore had given remarks blaming liberals and members of the LGBTQ community for America’s political woes.

“Who are they? The liberals. They don’t want conservative values,” Moore said, according to CNN. “They are the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender … who want to change our culture. They are socialists who want to change our way of life. Putting man above God. And the government is our god. They are the Washington establishment. They want to keep everything the same so they don’t lose their position, power and prestige.”

Moore was also interrupted on Wednesday by a protester who yelled of the women who have accused Moore of sexual assault and misconduct: “Are all the girls lying? Why would they lie?”
