The Color Purple as a Trending Topic
Vice President Harris chose purple to unify her look for a meaningful reason. CNN's Abby Phillip pointed out during Inauguration Day coverage that Harris used purple and yellow as colors to launch her presidential campaign — a nod to Shirley Chisholm, who became the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress. Chisholm would later run for president in 1972. Phillip noted that Chisholm's boundary-breaking trajectory in politics in part inspired Harris' career.

Mitten Mania
Sanders' mittens also caused conversation, as New York Times fashion critic Vanessa Friedman noted in a tweet, "In all the inauguration fashion news, let us not overlook Senator Bernie Sanders' mittens."
Turns out, Sanders' mittens hold special meaning. Jen Ellis, a teacher from Essex Junction, Vermont, made them for him a few years ago and even makes similar styles for those interested in a pair.
"I made Bernie's mittens as a gift a couple years ago. They are made from repurposed wool sweaters and lined with fleece (made from recycled plastic bottles). #BerniesMittens," Ellis wrote onĀ Twitter.
