It looks like zombie cat may have found a canine companion. The police department in Merrimack, New Hampshire, posted a photo to its Facebook page this week of a creature some are calling a “zombie dog.”

“This was seen on Baboosic Lake Rd. near the Upper Elementary School this morning. It’s most likely a coyote and since the animal isn’t menacing or vicious, we’ve been advised by Fish & Game to leave it alone as the pups are now moving about on their own,” reads the Merrimack Police Department’s post.

But some folks have other ideas on what “zombie dog” is, ranging from the legendary chupacabra (a Latin American mythical beast who kills goats) to somewhat less-horrific guesses such as a sick fox, an emaciated lion, a hyena, and even a tiny moose. Still, others suspect the photo is a hoax.

“To be honest, it looks like something out of a horror movie,” Merrimack police Lt. Matthew Tarleton told the Boston Globe. “I don’t know what it is, it’s definitely unique-looking.”

Tarleton was assigned to find the animal this week, aided by a New Hampshire state wildlife official. If the creature is found to have rabies, the lieutenant told the Globe that it will have to be put down.

“If [people] are out with their kids or pets, and if they see it, we’re asking them not to approach it or take matters into their own hands, but to notify us instead,” said Tarleton. “The message we want to put out there is not to alarm people, but to let people in the area be aware of it.”

Hmmm. What would Tim Burton have to say about all this?
