Westminster Dog to Watch: Enzo the Iceman
Enzo: that dog will hunt–and fetch ice.
The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is underway, and we have the inside scoop on some dogs to watch this year! Next up: Enzo! This strong and playful dog is celebrating a birthday today and could take the cake tomorrow at Best in Show.
Full Name: BISS Ch Busy B’s D’Artagnan SH
Breed: Spinone Italiano. Also known as Italian Wire-haired Pointing Dog or Italian Griffon. This ancient breed was created for hunting. Spinones are strong and playful. They have wired hair and expressive eyes.
Category: Sporting Group. These dogs hunt, either by retrieving, flushing or pointing.
Age: Enzo turns 5 today! Happy Birthday, Enzo!
Hometown: Pottstown, Pa., outside Philadelphia
Owner Family: Ernest Conover and Bonnie Baxter both work at GlaxoSmithKline. The family includes a bulldog, Casper, and Enzo’s son, Turin. They bought an RV to go to dog shows.
What the Judges Are Looking For: A smart and gentle expression.
Why He Could Win: Enzo or one of his offspring have a good chance of winning just by the numbers: three of the pups from his first litter will be competing, too. Enzo has been the number two Spinone in the country for three years.
Fun Facts: Enzo knows how to get ice from the dispenser on the refrigerator door. He’s a star of a YouTube video Enzo the Iceman. He’s constantly getting ice treats for himself and the two dogs he lives with. “It’s an endless parade,” says Baxter. “It’s the worst thing my husband and I ever taught him.”
Enzo actually hunts and is a certified senior hunter, a rarity at Westminster. He points and retrieves pheasant, chukar and grouse. Because he knows how to retrieve birds gently, Conover will ask him to carry a potato chip in his mouth without crushing it.
Enzo is showing 1:15 p.m. Tuesday. If he wins best of breed, catch him during day two of USA Network’s live coverage of Westminster on Feb. 10, from 8-11 p.m. (ET)
