Unlike human doctors, veterinarians have to be prepared to handle clients of many different species. (Once you’ve seen one human appendix, you’ve pretty much seen ’em all.)

To ready themselves for this challenge, veterinary hopefuls must complete four grueling years of school, with the final year being the most demanding as students get out of the books and start finding out what real life as a vet can be like.

Animal Planet’s Life at Vet U offers a behind-the-scenes look at the surprises, struggles and lessons that make up the average vet student’s fourth year. The six-part series follows six students at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine as they learn to save and care for cats, dogs, cows, zebras and just about everything in between.

From welcoming a brand-new puppy to the world to helping a family through the loss of a pet, these students have to be ready to aid a wide variety of animals at any stage of life.
