We’ve seen a lot of orca footage during our time in the ol’ animal-beat trenches, and let’s just say that it does not always go this well.

Sam Kynman-Cole, of topVIEW Photography, had heard of orca sightings in Army Bay, Auckland, so he dutifully sent up the ol’ drone to see what he could spot. What he ended up capturing wasn’t a pod gleefully dismembering a seal, but rather a lone orca who was apparently just hanging out, palling around with a kayaker.

The kayaker, who’s not even in his boat half the time, mostly just swims around in the water with the orca, who is in all likelihood very aware of its ability to devour the man. Eventually, he (the kayaker, not the orca) returns to his boat and paddles around with the mammal for a while longer before they go their separate ways. Strangers in the … ocean, exchanging glances
