Is NBC’s upcoming Animal Practice a breakthrough in comedy – or another example of televised animal cruelty? Gavin Polone argues that the series, starring Crystal the monkey, promotes the inhumane treatment of animals both on and off set. Plus, the misleading portrayal of monkey behavior, he continues, may encourage fans of the show to buy a similar pet. Queen rocker Brian May is a fan of badgers – and he’s taking on Britain’s cattle farmers in their name. Although the government approved a plan to kill specified populations of badgers – which are seen as a burden to farmers because they spread bovine tuberculosis – the guitarist is a part of a coalition of animal welfare groups who are working to save the black-and-white creatures. –AP

Meet Kiara, a baby cub thought to be the world’s first liliger. Born in August at the Novosibirsk Zoo in Siberia, her mom, Zita, is a liger (lion-tiger hybrid) and her dad, Sam, is an African lion. Zoo visitors are due to catch a glimpse of the liliger as early as October. –ABC News

A puppy is back home after getting lost and sold by its owner’s neighbors. A western Pennsylvania couple found the puppy Sept. 3 and sold it for $50 instead of returning the dog to the owners; they were charged with conspiracy, not making a reasonable effort to return lost property and making a false report to police. –AP
