Firefighters in Southwest Ranches, Fla., rescued a 900-lb. pig after it got stuck in a pond. The Yorkshire pig, named Strawberry, was in the process of being moved to its new home by its owner when it slipped and fell into the water. –CBS Miami

Officials from the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., announced that their cheetah cubs will be named after the fastest American male and female to compete in the 100-meter race at the Olympics, meaning one cub will be named either Justin (Gatlin), Tyler (Gay) or Ryan (Bailey), and one will be named Allyson (Felix), Carmelita (Jeter) or Tianna (Madison). –ABC News

A strange creature dubbed the Manhattan Monster that washed ashore along New York’s East River was identified as a cooked pig by the Parks Department. The creature was originally spotted by resident Denise Ginley, who described it as having skin that was blue, green and red in places, and “big teeth with bone exposed where its top jaw should be.” –ABC New York

U.S. Olympic shooter Kim Rhodes attributed her difficulty in getting to London to her 4-month-old poodle Norman, who ate her airline ticket prior to the flight. “I know that sounds crazy but I can honestly say – and I have the pictures to prove that really happened,” she said. “It’s not just an excuse.” –Yahoo! Lancelot Encore, a clone of couple Edgar and Nina Otto’s late Labrador retriever, welcomed a litter of puppies on July 4th. The pair said they wanted to mate their pet, nicknamed Lancey, to see if the puppies would be any different from those born to a dad not a clone. So far? No difference. –Today
