Betty White gifted fellow comedienne Carol Burnett a gorilla for her birthday, adopting Glenda the gorilla in Burnett’s name through the Los Angeles Zoo’s Adopt an Animal program. “I love all animals,” she said. “Some more than others, including gorillas and Carol Burnett.” –New York Post

After spotting her missing dog on a segment on the Today show, Ruth Torres was briefly reunited with Dusty, her Irish wolfhound, before deciding to return him to the animal shelter. After his disappearance, Torres moved in with her mother, and Dusty was unable to get along with Torres’s mother’s pets. –NBC New York

Half of the country’s dogs and cats are overweight or obese, according to a recent study by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. With the rising weight comes additional health problems for pets, such as diabetes and heart disease, and as a result, increased medical bills for owners. –New York Times

Mad cow disease was discovered in a California dairy cow Tuesday, the fourth such finding since the ailment’s first appearance in the U.S. in 2003. But the USDA stated with confidence that no part of the cow had found its way into the country’s food supply. –Reuters
