A 200-lb. bear wandered onto the campus of Pace Brantley Hall School near Altamonte Springs, Fla., on Monday and rummaged through a Dumpster for food. Conservationists have developed a new technique for identifying wild cheetahs. By using the footprint identification technique, or FIT, which photographs the animal’s pawprint, researchers can monitor the big kitties without ever coming in contact with them.–BBC

Many people in California are outraged about the killing of eight coyotes in California’s Griffith Park last week after two people reported they were bitten by the animals there. They’re upset because the wildlife officials had no way of knowing whether those particular coyotes were responsible for the biting incidents.–L.A. Unleashed

This fall, the U.S. Supreme Court will decide whether selling films of dogfights or animal torture is protected by the First Amendment. The case pits free speech advocates and defenders of the humane treatment of animals against each other. “This is not about speech, but about a commercial activity of a sickening type,” said Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society of the United States.–L.A.
