Raising a happy and healthy pet is a job for the whole family! Erica Callais Falbaum, Founder of PEP! The Pet Education Project, a non-profit organization, is on a mission to turn kids into animal heroes by teaching them how to be responsible pet owners.
Her new children's book, “PEP! Squad, The 5 Steps to a Happy and Healthy Pet,” for sale now on Amazon, is aimed to teach kids the basics of pet care.

FOOD
What better way for kids to bond with their pets then by filling their tummies? Food duty is an easy task that your kids can do each day to help with pet care.

SHELTER
Encourage kids to keep pet areas — like litter boxes, feeding stations, and bedding — clean by setting up a rewards system.

WATER
Have your kids check water bowls before and after school each day. To keep pets hydrated and cool in the summer, kids can make easy 'pup'sicles. Mix water, dog food kibbles, and sweet treats (like banana slices) and then pop the mixture in the freezer it's ready to lick.

CARE
Time for a vet visit? Bring the kids! Vet trips can be fun and educational! Children can learn about important pet issues, like heartworm disease and the importance of spaying and neutering, from pet professionals.

LOVE
The most important thing kids can do for their pets is give them attention each day. Remind them that pets can't text or Snapchat when they are bored. It's part of their job as a pet owner to play with their furry friends and show them affection.

RESPONSIBILITY
Pledge to keep pets for life! Kids should understand that pets are not toys, but a long term commitment. Shelters are overcrowded, so it's important to pick a pet that is compatible with your family's lifestyle.
