From Tattoos to Teary Selfies: The Sweetest Ways Celebs Have Paid Tribute to Their Late Pets
Losing a pet is a heartbreaking life event, as these celebrities can attest. See the most wonderful ways A-listers paid tribute to their late furry friends
Orlando Bloom & Mighty
Bloom shared a tribute to his late pup on Instagram, including footage of new ink he got on his chest in honor of the dog, Mighty. The new tattoo includes the dog's name with an ace of spades symbol enclosed in a heart.
"Mighty's on the other side now," Bloom began an emotional caption. "After 7 days of searching from sunrise to sunset and into the wee hours, today, the 7th day ~the number of completion~ we found his collar."
"I have wept more this week than I thought possible, which has been very cathartic and healing," he continued. "I left no stone unturned, crawled thru all the manholes, under the roads, searched every back yard and creek bed. Had two separate sniffer dogs do their best as well."
The actor said he feels "grateful to have learned from my little Mighty man that love is eternal and the true meaning of devotion."
"I feel sure he was looking down on me whistling in every back yard and knowing that I was doing all I possibly could to respect our bond," wrote Bloom. "He was more than a companion. It was a soul connection for sure. I'm sorry. I love you. Thank you. RIP my MIGHTY HEART my little fellow A ♠️'s."
Jennifer Aniston & Dolly
In addition to the Friends star's tattoo honoring her dog Norman, who passed away in 2011, Aniston has a necklace that keeps her late pup Dolly, whom she shared with ex-husband Justin Theroux, close to her heart.
The silver pendant features a portrait of the German shepherd, who died in July 2019, surrounded by sparkling, diamond-like stones.
Jennifer Aniston & Norman
When Aniston's beloved dog Norman, a Welsh corgi-terrier mix, passed away in 2011 at age 15, she commemorated him with her first tattoo — his name, written in script on the inside of her right foot.
"I never thought that would ever happen," she said to ET Canada. "It's just my way to pay homage to him … forever."
Jonathan Van Ness & Bug the 2nd
In the wake of the death of his cat Bug the 2nd, the Queer Eye star looked for ways to "make this loss mean something more," and asked fans to donate to local animal shelters in the meantime.
Van Ness shared on Instagram that his furry friend, whom he adopted last September after the heartbreaking loss of his 13-year-old cat Bug, fell out of an open window while he slept.
"At some point last night while I slept by baby Bug fell from an open window and passed away," he wrote. "I'm hurting so bad today I can't put it into words, for anyone else experiencing grief & loss, I'm with you."
Sophie Turner & Waldo Picasso
Days after returning from their honeymoon in the Maldives, newlyweds Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner suffered the tragic loss of their Alaskan Klee Kai, who was hit by a car while on a walk with the couple's dog walker.
Joe Jonas & Waldo Picasso
"R.I.P. my little angel," Jonas wrote on Instagram in honor of his and Turner's late pup.
Demi Lovato & Buddy
To honor her beloved dog Buddy, who passed away in 2015, Demi Lovato got a permanent reminder of her furry friend inked on her ankle on Jan. 30, 2019, by celebrity tattoo artist Brian Woo, known as Dr. Woo.
"I will love you forever and never forget you," Demi captioned the photo alongside an angel emoji.
Sandra Bullock & Poppy & Ruby
Sandra Bullock recently revealed that she's been going through a difficult time lately: After her father John died in September, the actress shared in front of a crowd that she'd also lost dogs Poppy and Ruby a few weeks later.
"It's been a crappy few weeks," she said. "My dad died and both of my dogs died, so I don't feel like being nice!" (She proceeded to lovingly roast honoree Sarah Paulson, and to thank her for sending poppies in honor of Poppy.)
Poppy and Ruby were both extra-special dogs: Ruby had just two legs, Poppy three.
Speaking to PEOPLE in the World's Most Beautiful issue in 2015, the mom of two said her dogs "have no idea anything is missing. Ruby is missing her front two legs, but she walks upright like we do, and that's exactly how she goes to the bathroom as well. It's like watching a drunk sailor."
Pink & Frangelica 'Nanni' Moore Hart
In late September of 2018, Pink posted on Instagram that her dog of 16 years had died.
At the very least, it seems like her beloved companion held out until Pink returned from her Beautiful Trauma World Tour. "Rest in sunshine pretty girl. Thanks for waiting for me to get home," she wrote on Instagram along with a photo of her kissing Frangelica's snout.
Eva Longoria & Jinxy
"So the day I've been dreading happened last night. Jinxy passed away in my arms at the vet. He had a stroke that he just couldn't come back from," Longoria explained in her post.
The 15-year-old dog ("96 in dog years," she pointed out in her caption) was often found by his famous mom's side, even posing on a magazine cover with her.
"I'm so sad but know that he's out of his suffering...He will be missed by many. I love you Jinxy," she wrote alongside a broken heart emoji.
Ian Somerhalder & Ira
Ian Somerhalder and wife Nikki Reed had to bid goodybye to one of their canine kids in June 2018, after their German shepherd Ira died from a battle with cancer.
"I've never known a more incredible animal. A soul that spoke 1,000 languages. Kid, I will miss you and anyone that ever got to know you will miss you," the Vampie Diaries actor captioned a gallery of family photos featuring Ira on Instagram. "Thank you for loving me like I've never known... I love you kiddo."
Somerhalder signed off with a simple yet heart-wrenching, "Love, Dad."
Miley Cyrus & Floyd
Miley has chosen to honor many of her pets — both living and dead — with a permanent place on her body. When her Alaskan Klee Kai dog Floyd passed away, she got a tattoo of him saying "With a little help from my fwends" below her left underarm. Additionally, she has the likeness of her deceased blowfish, Pablow, inked on her arm.
Gus Kenworthy & Beemo
Mere months after rescuing his dog Beemo from a South Korean meat farm during the 2018 Winter Games in PyeongChang, Olympic skier Kenworthy shared the heartbreaking news that his new pup had died suddenly due to a fatal birth defect that he hadn't known about.
At the end of a tear-inducing post about how much Beemo meant to him, Kenworthy sent out a plea to other pet parents: "If any of you have pets up in doggy heaven please tell them to go find Bee because she could really use a good play date right now."
Zac Efron & Puppy Efron
Zac Efron shared a slobbery snap of him and his furry "best friend" alongside apt lyrics by Chance the Rapper to honor his passing.
"Felt hog tied ever since my dog died/ He lived to 84, damn, that's a long ride/ I know he up there he just sit and he wait/ I'll be racing up the stairs I'mma get to the gate singing."
"I'll see you at the finish line, RIP Puppy Efron," the Greatest Showman actor added.
Chrissy Teigen & Puddy
"Today our baby, Puddy, has gone on to the pup heavens. John and I got Puddy in our first year of dating, when I convinced him half-birthday presents were a real thing," Teigen wrote in her emotional goodbye post to the loyal canine.
Teigen wrote that Puddy had been with her and John through "every up, down, new house, new city, new tour, new travel. He welcomed new pups and loved on new babies and new bellies."
Puddy is survived by his French bulldog wife, Pippa, as well as the couple's other dogs, Pepper and Penny.
Khloé Kardashian & Gabbana
In January 2018, then-pregnant Khloé Kardashian's black Lab Gabanna died, and the Good American mogul paid a sweet tribute to the many years she shared with her "first child" over Instagram.
"Last night my sweet Gabbana passed away," wrote Kardashian. "She was more than a pet. She was my first child, my companion and my friend. She was incredible! She made sure I was never lonely even during lonely times. The house will never be the same. I never thought I would be this devastated over loosing [sic] a dog but 14 years, is a long time together. She filled a significant role in my life and I'm forever grateful. I love you Goober!! I'll remember you always!"
Jonathan Van Ness & Bug
When Queer Eye's Van Ness' beloved cat of 13 years passed away in August 2018, he knew exactly how Bug would have expected him to grieve and move forwards.
"Thanks for your support & love," Van Ness wrote after announcing his pet's passing. "Bug would fully except [sic] me to strap on a fierce heel and power stomp around the house probably to 'Breathin' by Ariana bc thats our fav song rn, so I shall cry, I shall model walk, I will catch some wind in my hair and miss my Buggy everyday," he vowed.
Tom Hardy & Woodstock, a.k.a. 'Woody'
Tom Hardy paid a heartfelt tribute to his loyal pooch, who passed away from "an aggressive Polymyositis" at only six years old.
After sharing Woody's impressive list of accolades — from appearing on Peaky Blinders to being ranked "#73 most influential animal in TIME magazine," Hardy truly poured his heart out, mourning the loss of his "best friend."
"He was an Angel. And he was my best friend. We went through so much together... We at home are devastated by his loss. I am ultimately grateful for his loyal companionship and love and it is of some great comfort that he is no longer suffering. Above all, I am completely gutted."
"The world for me was a better place with him in it and by my side. To the bestest friend ever," he went on, adding, "Woody was the bestest of journey companions we ever could dream of having. Our souls intertwined forever."
Jeffrey Dean Morgan & Bisou
To honor his rescue dog, Bisou, Morgan got a script tattoo of her name on his forearm after her passing in 2015.
"I rescued her on the Venice boardwalk," he told Hudson Valley News Network in 2017. "Some kids were selling three litters of puppies and I dug through the box and there was one, that, she was maybe four inches long, and I was like, I want to take that one that's not going to make it through the day." Bisou, which means 'kiss' in French, ended up sticking by Morgan's side for 19 years.
"Two days after she passed I had her name tattooed on my arm," he continued. "But oh, my god I miss her, I miss her so much."
Justin Bieber & Sammy
Canada's CTV News reported that the pup, who lived with Bieber's grandparents, was a comfort to the star when he moved in 2009.
"We moved to a city where we didn't really know anybody so I wanted a friend, and Sam was that friend. I visited him in an animal shelter, I really encourage going out to an animal shelter to get a dog that doesn't have a home," Bieber said.
