Kicking off Adopt-a-Dog month, Extrahost Mario Lopez takes his search for a puppy to the Burbank Animal Shelter on tonight’s show and speaks with expert Stacie Levin about how to select the right rescue dog. “Ask to see the dog out of the cage,” Levin suggests. “Because once you take them out of the cage, they’re completely different dogs.” And, don’t be alarmed by how a shelter dog may greet you, she says, “Expect to be barked at, but don’t let that deter you.”

It’s recommended that you return to the shelter several times before selecting a dog to take home. Bear in mind that while shelter dogs may not be perfect in every way, there’s one guarantee: “The thing about adopted dogs is it’s so rewarding because they’re so grateful,” Levin says.
