A baby squirrel in Spokane, Wash., has taken up residence inside a bird box and made it clear he’ll have no visitors at his new home.

“We have had squirrels investigating the boxes before,” says Christine Haines, whose backyard is where the squirrel has settled in, “but never one that looked so ready to keep visitors from the door!”

Though the boxes were built by Haines’s husband to attract Northern Flicker birds, she believes this one will now house a family of squirrels instead.

“I believe the young squirrel was calling for its mother,” she says of its open-mouthed expression. Let’s hope he’s been expecting her!
