According to the Chinese zodiac calendar, 2015 is the year of the sheep.

According to everyone else, it’s the year of the rat.

First there was pizza rat, then there was rat vs. pigeon, and now there’s Selfie Rat.

Selfie rat comes to us via Connecticut man Don Richards, who was visiting N.Y.C. recently when he watched a man who’d fallen asleep on a subway platform in Brooklyn receive a rude awakening from a rat that decided to crawl all up on him.

Richards and the man apparently bonded over the shared trauma of witnessing such an event, but what really elevates this story from a simple “man wakes up on the subway to find a rat crawling on him” tale is that the lil’ guy took a selfie while he was making his new friend! (The flash from the picture is what woke the guy up.)

Basically, the takeaway here is that they’re learning. They’ve figured out the quickest way to our hearts is via the selfie, and they’re prepping for a takeover. Expect that by this time next year, you’ll be sending out pictures with local rats as your Christmas cards.
