When squirrels aren’t stalking us in the park or getting distressingly close to our sandwiches, they are pretty darn adorable.

A month ago, a Reddit user name carefree_dude’s wife found a squirrel, injured and in pain, writhing on the side of the road with what appeared to be severe head trauma.

After six days of treatment at a wildlife rehabilitator, the recovering squirrel, now named Mittens due to his super soft fur, came home with the couple, who’d one day like to open an animal rehabilitation center. Mittens still needed help drinking water and walking … and eventually took up residency in their Christmas tree.

“We are still caring for him, though he will likely never be able to be released again,” the Reddit user wrote. “He may not be able to live a wild life, but if he continues to recover, we can help him live a good life.”

On Monday, carefree_dude posted that Mittens is still living in their tree, giving the couple the perfect excuse to never, ever take down their Christmas tree.
