The Arthur star loved feeding the lemurs at Miami's Jungle Island

Sunday wasn’t Mother’s Day for British actor Russell Brand, because Britons already celebrated the holiday back in April. So what’s an actor on location to do with the day? Go visit some zoo animals!

Filming for his role in the flick Rock of Ages (also starring Tom Cruise and Catherine Zeta Jones) begins next week, so Brand decided to take a walk on the wild side at Jungle Island’s Lemur Experience in Miami Beach.

“Russell had a blast and was in a great mood,” a source tells PEOPLE. “He was really nice to staffers and loved feeding the lemurs. He kept everyone in stitches with his jokes and comments.”

Traveling sans wife Katy Perry, the comedian cozied up to a Capuchin monkey (above) and a scaly gator during his 45-minute interactive tour. The Arthur star has been in the sunshine state for several days, enjoying the beach and great weather – he even ordered some jet skis for his oceanic pleasure at the private home where he’s staying. Watch out for sharks, Russell!
