A missing elderly woman is safe once more thanks to a heroic dog and her keen nose.

On Dec. 29, teacher Rebecca Burley was heading out to volunteer at the Isle of Wight Animal Shelter in Norfolk, Virginia, when her dog Roxanne started begging for a walk, reports WVEC

So Burley postponed her departure and took her rescue Lab/hound mix for a stroll. During the walk the woman noticed a surprising amount of police officers in the area.

“One of the officers pulled up and asked if we have seen someone walking around in a nightgown, and I said, ‘No,’ but assumed it was an elder person,” Burley said.

Roxanne and Burley went on their way, but a few moments later the dog started pulling her owner away from their usual route.

“She pulled me towards a ditch, and there was a woman laying down in a nightgown, it turns out she was in some kind of distress,” the owner told the news station.

It was the elderly woman the police were searching for. Burley immediately brought the police over to help. The officers called the paramedics, who rushed the missing woman to a nearby medical center.

Burley is unsure who the woman is and her current condition, but she hopes the family will reach out and keep her updated. As for Roxanne, she received an extra cookie for her impressive work.
