PHOTOS: Meet Shotzy, the Cute and Cranky Terrier Mix You Have to Follow on Instagram
MEANT TO BE
Art director Troy Dunham and his partner, James Irvin, an architect, went to the Badass Brooklyn adoption event with every intention of adopting a different dog — but Shotzy (@shotzy_time), a 4-year-old terrier mix, who won PEOPLE's #cutepic contest this week, had other ideas. "We sat down at one point and he immediately ran up into our laps and gave us huge kisses," Dunham recalls. "We went directly back to the adoption coordinator and told them that HE had chosen US! And we couldn't be happier!!!"
The friendly pup — described as "equal parts playful and energetic and downright cranky" — is full of personality; that is, as soon as you can get him out of bed. "In the morning when it is time for his walk, I literally have to go pull the blankets off of him and wake him up," says Dunham. "He is not one of those dogs who licks your face at 6 a.m. to go out. He is completely content to sleep until noon."
ONE OF A KIND
The couple wouldn't change a thing about their cuddly, quirky dog. "We actually LOVE the cranky part of his personality just as much as the playful," he says. "He loves to play catch and tug of war. And he loves to destroy every stuffed toy that we buy for him. We have a few of the 'indestructible' ones that he is slowly working his way through to destruction."
CAN YOU DIG IT?
Digging is this guy's favorite thing ever, and since dirt can be hard to come by in the concrete jungle, his breed-specific need to burrow manifests itself in some strange ways. "His ultimate favorite spot to hide all of his treats, bully sticks, pig hoofs (all the gross stuff dogs eat) is under James's pillow on the bed," Dunham says. "Every night at bed time is, 'Ahhh! Shotzy?? What is this???' "
PAYING IT FORWARD
The process of adopting the pooch was "so fantastic" that Dunham decided to give back by volunteering with Badass Brooklyn by doing home visits, which are on-site interviews with potential adopters in the environment that the dog will be living in. "Shotzy comes with me on 90 percent of them," he says. "He is such a friendly dog, he loves meeting all of the new people and getting all of the belly rubs and attention."
