If you know a couple driving a gold Buick SUV through Ohio, you may want to tell them about the Internet outrage that’s resulted from their photo.

A vehicle matching that description was photographed driving through Tuscarawas County, Ohio, on Sunday, with a leashed cat perched on the hood. Though bystanders did not get the vehicle’s license plate number, New Philadelphia, Ohio, resident Polly Vandall snapped some photos of the spectacle. She put them on Facebook, and they went viral, eliciting a mix of confusion and outrage.

There I was, sitting at a red light, in the middle of town. I look up and see….. Cat. On a leash. Tied to the hood of a car. Driving through town. #thisJustHappened

“It was walking around and it was not happy to be on the hood,” Vandall told WKYC News. “People around the car were staring at the cat – quite distracted,” she said.

Vandall also said the response has been intense. “I’m not passing judgment on this woman,” she said. “I captured a few seconds of her life. I have no idea what happened right before or right after this moment. ”

New Philadelphia Police Chief Michael Goodwin told WKYC it’s unclear if the couple was violating animal cruelty laws. A surveillance camera at a gas station recorded the couple walking the cat before placing it back on the vehicle’s hood, and a station attendant said the couple claimed to be from California and headed to Cleveland.
