Newborn Giraffe Is 19th to Be Born at Sacramento Zoo
Mother Shani’s yet-unnamed son weighs in at163 lbs. and measures over 6-feet-tall
A baby bundle arrived at the Sacramento Zoo on Sunday — and this one was larger than most, weighing in at 163 lbs. and measuring over 6-feet-tall!
The newborn belongs to Shani, a 6-year-old Masai giraffe residing at the Sacramento Zoo, who posted aww-dorable pics of the leggy animal on its Facebook page on Monday.
“This is a joyous occasion for the Sacramento Zoo,” said animal collection director Matt McKim. “The two are not currently visible to the public; we will take cues from [mom] and the calf as to when they are ready to make their public debut. We hope it will be in the coming weeks.”
The cuteness is already strong with these two, who are seen in one photo nuzzling (notice mom’s head is as big as her boy’s head and neck). The pair are currently resting up in the zoo’s giraffe barn and may have access to the public side yard periodically over the next few days, the zoo said.
The as-yet-unnamed baby — who already has a set of enviable eyelashes — is the 19th born at the Sacramento Zoo since 1964.
