Most dogs are happy to see you, but this dog has better reason than most to get excited.

The dog in the video is Thames, a 4-year-old German shepherd that went missing on Sunday, May 3, during a search and rescue training exercise in the Tararua mountains in New Zealand. He wasn’t found until the following Sunday.

While Thames was surviving in the mountains on his own, he became a small-scale Internet star in his home country and abroad as New Zealand police updated the public on the search for the dog and popularized the hashtag #ComeHomeThames.

Constable Mike Wakefield, Thames’ handler, told the New Zealand Herald that he and his sons were “desperately missing” the dog. According to a police statement, the dog was found hungry but in good condition.

He wolfed down half of my salami, which is a treat for him, I gave him a cuddle and we had a big play,” Wakefield was quoted as saying. “I was just lost for words.

A veterinarian has since cleared Thames to return to work, but before that happens, he and Wakefield will enjoy a vacation.
