The Shaws have lost their son, but they still have a connection to Sam.

According to FOX 35, Sam Shaw lost control of his Jeep on Florida State Road 417 and crashed on Monday. Sam, 19, did not survive the accident, but his rescue dog Taz, who was in the car with him, did.

Taz, understandably frightened by the fatal accident ran away from the scene and went missing.

“You know, we knew he was out here, and we didn’t want to leave him somewhere, and have him gone too,” Sam’s father, Steve Shaw, told the station.

Determined to not to lose Taz too, the family spread word of his disappearance on social media and tirelessly searched for the dog in the woods and on the roads near Sam’s crash.

After 48 hours of fruitless searching, the Shaws got the call they were hoping for: a good Samaritan had found their dog.

Julie first spotted the mutt on Wednesday morning hanging out near her classroom at Valencia Community College. When she realized the dog was still there shaking after class, she thought about calling Animal Control.

“I was like, ‘Oh he can’t go to the shelter!’ Like, I could tell he belonged to somebody. I was like, ‘I’ll take him home, post pics and try to find his owner,'” she said.

It didn’t take long for her to track down the Shaws, reuniting the family with their son’s dog on Wednesday evening.
