Three cheers for Duke the Great Pyrenees!
The dog is ready to start a third term as honorary mayor of Cormorant Township, Minnesota, and his constituents couldn’t be happier.
“I don’t know who would run against him,” Minnesota resident Karen Nelson told ABC News, who reported the story. “Cause he’s done such great things for the community.”
We know what you’re thinking: Huh? During his first two terms, the fluffy white pooch worked to promote a sense of community in Cormorant by appearing on area billboards and more, ABC News said.
“He’s the only dog that’s been elected mayor in America,” resident Becky Ulven told WDAY News, who covered the village’s Annual Cormorant Daze on Saturday.
The dog’s owner told WDAY that Duke’s political career was not planned. “Three years ago, it happened by accident, it was a write in vote. You pay a dollar and you can vote,” David Rick said.
With his second term now almost over, a third term seems very likely for the 9-year-old pooch.
“Everybody voted for Duke,” Rick said, “except for one vote for his girlfriend, Lassie.”
