And just like that, news of Hannah Davis and Jeter’s engagament spread across the world, leaving Kane’s moment in the spotlight a little muted. Don’t worry big guy, we still want to get to know you!
Kane is a 1-year-old Italian mastiff and the retired New York Yankees captain’s first pet. When the puppy first came home with Jeter after Christmas, the athlete was a little worried about how things would work, especially because he didn’t grow up around animals or have a lot of time to be with them on the road.
“When I first got Kane, I panicked a little. I’m lying. Actually, I panicked a lot. We had some epic standoffs at the beginning,” Jeter writes in the post. “He was energetic, thought he was king of the house, and I was a nervous owner. Kane would bite and nip and not pay attention to anything I said. My panicking was probably making him panic.”
Jeter was eventually able to put the panic aside and start embracing the joys of being a pet owner, and when he calmed down, so did Kane. Now, the little pup is a beautiful 100-pound dog who loves to cuddle and nap. There are still some challenges to overcome with training, but Jeter says he is looking forward to taking on those obstacles instead of fretting over them.
“Being a ‘dog owner’ is still new to me,” Jeter concludes. “A little challenge is probably good. I guess it’s possible to learn new tricks.”
