Hit by a hard wave of bad luck, Colin Campbell rode it right into the arms of a new best friend.

After his marriage unexpectedly ended, Campbell decided to rescue a dog as part of the healing process. That dog was George the Newfoundland, a sweet, giant slobbery beast who has changed Campbell’s life in all the right ways.

With George, Campbell discovered a new passion: surfing. And the dog did not hesitate in joining him, hopping on the board and riding out the waves like a pro. The Newfoundland went on to compete in dog surf competitions and developed a love for all water sports, including puddle jumping.

Campbell was so moved by all that his dog can do, and the amazing lessons George has taught him so far, that he decided to write Free Days with George. The book is a tribute to all of the blissful moments the pair have spent together.

“I don’t want George to leave a hole in my life, and I also want him to touch other people,” Campbell told PEOPLE about his motivation for writing the book. “So I thought, if I wrote this book, I could accomplish those things. It’s a story that puts a smile on people’s faces.”

Campbell sat down with PEOPLE to tell us about just a few of the unbelievable things George has done. To learn more, pick up a copy of Free Days with George, which is already a bestseller in Canada, now available in the United States.
