Brewster the boxer is now healthy, happy and ready to find a home for the holidays
Tuesday was a very important day for Brewster.
It was officially “Wear Blue for Brewster” day, as the dog’s accused abuser, Anthony Estevez, 25, had his day in court, a few months after turning in the emaciated pup to a New York City animal shelter.
Late on Tuesday the power of all that support became clear as the Queens District Attorney announced that the Ridgewood, Queens, man had pleaded guilty to felony animal cruelty after claiming in October to have found the starving boxer lying in a city park.
It was determine that Estevez was actually the dog’s owner and had failed to properly care for or feed him – Brewster weighed a mere 25 lbs. at intake, when a healthy pup like him should weigh 60 lbs.
“A dog may be a man’s best friend but in this case the defendant proved to be Brewster’s worst enemy,” Queens district attorney Richard A. Brown said in a statement. “When the defendant brought Brewster to the shelter, the animal was emaciated, severely malnourished and did not have the energy to walk. Brewster has since recovered and now the defendant is a convicted felon who is prohibited from owning another animal [for three years] and must register with the New York City Department of Health as an animal abuser. It is expected that Brewster will soon be adopted into a loving home.”
Also crystal clear on Tuesday: Brewster doesn’t hold a grudge. He celebrated at the district attorney’s office with rescuers from the Adopt a Boxer Rescue, with tail wags and photos. “Brewster is free,” reads a caption for a celebratory video, which was liked over 5,000 times on Facebook.[facebook url="https://www.facebook.com/adoptaboxerrescue/videos/1049064748447359/" /]
The future is definitely bright for the handsome dog who is exceedingly loving despite what was done to him.
“Brewster is settling in to his new foster home and doing great!” reads a post from Dec. 7 of Brewster gazing at the ocean. “He gets to go to work with his foster dad and got a trip to the Jersey shore. He loves snuggling! He even did well with getting a bath last week.”
