Kristin Chenoweth’s dog Maddie had a few health scares earlier this year, but the Maltese is slowly coming out of the woods – and helping the actress hone her nursing skills.

“She had pancreatitis. She got over that. And then her knee busted out,” Chenoweth told PEOPLE last week at the InStyle Summer Soiree in West Hollywood. “But she’s all right. She’s gotten rid of her cone and her stitches.” PHOTOS: Celebrity Pet PDA!

Chenoweth’s “little diva” has been putting weight on her right back leg, and even earned a celebratory Tweet when she came in at 6.5-7 lbs. at her last weigh-in earlier this month. But Maddie still needs a watchful eye – and that’s proving to be a challenge for Chenoweth.

“I have to watch her for three to five months. No jumping or running,” she said. “Have you ever had a Maltese? She’s impossible!”

Thankfully, there’s usually a crew of people around to help with that. “I do take her to work,” Chenoweth said. “Everybody babies her.”
